Industrial utilization of medicinal and aromatic plants
Medicinal aromatic plants belong to a big plant group with a great interest due to its pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutritional application. In addition, they are also an alternative to traditional crop with species in high demand at the current international market. It is expected to provide basic knowledge and skills related to production and chemical features of essences and extracts from local plants in Iberian Peninsula. The main purpose of this course is that students have an approach to economical importance, uses, botany and harvested processes of the most significant medicinal aromatic and seasoning specie plants. The objectives of this course are: * To classify and identify aromatic plant, seasonings and medicinal plant. * To understand cultivation techniques and effectively apply current methodology for problem solving * To learn and understand the most important active constituent. * To know the different groups of active components of these plants. * To identify the useful application of this kind of plant in nutritional, cosmetic, perfumery, liquor, phytotherapy and pharmacological industry.

OBJECTIVES

It is expected to provide basic knowledge and skills related to production and chemical features of essences and extracts from local plants in Iberian Peninsula.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The teaching methodologies are theoretical lessons, course work assignment and on - line student support (tutorship). A videoconference is programmed at the beginning of the course.
The theoretical lessons are taught by on-line learning media support. They consist of basic books, scientific survey and links to websites. The necessary material is available on the Open Course Ware.
Students should do tasks, activities and tests during the course
Tutorship consists of online meeting between teacher and students.
The evaluation is a continuous assessment with test and course work assignments.
EVALUATION
In order to be evaluated, the student must have done all the compulsory activities of the course.
The evaluation of students is an on line continuous assessment and it is divided into the following percentages:
- Participation in course blog and test 15%
- Course work assignment (group or single project) 35%
- Final multiple choice online exam 50%
In case the student does not pass the exam, there will be a second extraordinary test.
